Trainers! Are you ready? Have you mentally prepared yourself for the potty training days? If yes, check this blog piece out! If not, still check this blog piece out! We’re here to help you get prepared for this potty training thing!
Why cloth trainers? For us, daycare and carpet and couches and beds. Accidents aren’t fun, but they’re part of this phase. Trainers help out these accidents and saves the carpet. Little ones need to be able to pull up and down something, but it needs to be something that can hold an accident.
Let’s start with the best thing about each trainer and then dive into all the things there are to know about each trainer:
- Thirsties – feels the most like underwear
- Grovia – GroCool lining so you little on feels wet
- Lil Learnerz – microfiber for quick absorbency
- Best Bottoms – reusable; take out insert, wipe down
I can’t express how awesome these are! These are our go-to trainers for when we are at home. We have had numerous accidents in them and even though they are cotton on the outer layer, we haven’t had one leak. Gentle as gentle comes on these elastics making this trainer feel the most like underwear.
Made with 4 layers of certified organic cotton as the absorbing layers, these trainers are super absorbent. See the graphic above showing the absorbing zone in the middle. This zone is lined with a waterproof layer to help prevent leaks.
The Thirties trainers probably aren’t best for nighttime use because of the cotton outer being prone to wicking. If wanting to use them for overnight, pair with a waterproof diaper cover. These hold a lot; added absorbency may not be necessary for overnight use.
My favorite aspect of the Grovia trainer is the side snapping design because…poo. In the early days of potty training, your child will inevitably have a poo accident. Not having to pull a trainer down my child’s leg is a huge plus! We use cloth trainers at daycare and side snapping is an absolute must.
Let’s talk the awesomeness of a one size trainer! Made to fit a child from size 1T to 3T. This sizing is spot on. My son is wearing 3T and has maxed out this trainer. But don’t worry, you can add on some sizing with extra side panels (sold separately).
These extra side panels are fabulous! If we want him to wear a Grovia trainer to bed, we don’t worry about the extra panels. But we do need the extra side panels during the day because we want him to be independent. Adding the side panels give him the extra sizing needed so he can pull up and down the trainer all on his own. He feels like such a big boy when he does this!
But wait! There’s more! The Grovia trainer has a pocket on the inside. Are you planning a longer than usual car ride? Maybe you need a little extra “just in case” for overnight training? Whatever your reason, you’ve got the pocket to stuff for extra absorbency.
The outer layer is fully waterproof with a hidden absorbency layer of 55% hemp and 45% cotton. Pair this with a booster or two inside the pocket and you’re set for overnight use.
Just like Grovia, Lil Learners have a side snapping option for their size xsmall and small – from about 15lbs to 30lbs (see sizing information below). This works out because the poo accidents tend to be earlier on in the diaper training days. As your little one grows bigger, they could be able to use the traditional pull up and down style.
The best feature is the quick absorbency. Since the absorbing layer is made from microfiber, any accident your child has will be quickly absorbed. This means less of a chance of leaks; especially if you have a flooder.
The outer layer is fully waterproof. This lessens the chance of wicking. Because of this layer, overnight use is an option. Do you have an older child who still isn’t night trained? Check out the bigger sizes.
Can we say REUSABLE!!! This design is awesome! The entire inner material is a wipeable, waterproof surface.
Another plus is the ability to be able to customize this trainer. See the below graphic showing the inner flaps that hold down inserts. There’s also a snap option to insure the insert stays perfectly in place. The snap is universal so you can literally pick almost any snapable insert on the market. Have some Thirsties pockets? Those inserts snap right on. Have a Lalabye OS from your diapering days? Those also snap right on. The options are endless.
Be sure to check out the Best Bottom FeelWET inserts for the trainers. These FeelWet inserts are best early on when you’re wanting your child to feel the wetness from their accident. This combo is ultra trim and looks like underwear. This Best Bottom Trainer and Best Bottom insert combo with its FeelWET technology can help speed along the potty training process.
Be sure to size up.
Thirsties and Grovia run true to size. Lil Learnerz and Best Bottoms run small so be sure to go up one size.
So, let’s do this!
Trainers are an amazing way to get through potty training without accidents everywhere. But remember, potty training can take time. Little ones have good weeks and they have not so good weeks. Sometimes they need a day or two back in diapers so they can reset. And this is okay. It’s not a sprint to the finish line. Slow and steady can sometimes win the race. But no matter the speed your child train’s, know that there are trainers to meet your family’s needs.
Cheers to a quick potty training process and if not, cheers to getting through the potty training process!
