Boost it Up!
Inserts…the main thing everyone wants to know is “how much does it hold?!” Don’t worry, we’ll get to
that, but did you know there’s a little bit more to it. Some are more durable, some absorb more quickly,
and some hold more ounces compared to their mass.
Each material or combination of materials has benefits some other materials may or may not have.
Most absorbent material:
Nothing can beat hemp. Some have tried. Some have failed. Hemp simply gets the job done every time.
Hemp is said to be 30% more absorbent than cotton.
Thirsties Small Hemp Inserts hold 6oz
Smart Bottoms Small Hemp Inserts hold just under 5oz
Thirsties Stay Dry Duo size 1 inserts hold 7oz and size 2 holds 10oz
Geffen also makes trim and absorbent hemp inserts
Want something that will last from newborn to potty training? Then bamboo is the material for you.
Most trim material:
Paper thin, yet still decently absorbent is cotton. It may not hold the most, but sometimes you don’t
need a lot of extra boost to your diaper.
Best Bottoms Medium Bamboo holds 7oz
Sustainablebabyish and Rumparooz also make bamboo inserts
Have a flooder? Look no further than microfiber. It absorbs incredibly fast!
Early on, my son would flood. Then we went through a period of bliss and no leaks. Then he decided to
make me figure things out all over again. He reached the toddler phase of holding his pee for hours and
then flooding his diapers – especially his first diaper of the day. Luckily I knew what to do! Microfiber for
Our flooding solution was simple. Since microfiber shouldn’t touch the skin, I grabbed a Smart Bottoms
fleece liner, a Best Bottoms microfiber insert and a random diaper of choosing. The fleece liner went up
again his skin with the microfiber insert directly under it. Then the diaper went on as normal. The
microfiber material absorbed the bulk of the flood quickly, allowing the diaper material (hemp, bamboo,
or cotton) some time to play catch up and absorb the rest.
Best Bottoms Small Microfiber doubler holds 6oz
Both trim and absorbent, the Thirsties hemp or cotton inserts are by far the best bang for your buck.
They are trim yet hold a lot. Perfect addition to almost any diaper on the market; nighttime fitteds
Thirsties Small Hemp Inserts hold 6oz and the cotton holds 4 oz – check out below to see how trim they
are for what they hold!
Lighthouse Kids AIO + Thirsties Small Cotton Insert
Lighthouse Kids Company diaper holds 12oz when it’s pairted with the booster it comes with. But what if
you need more, but don’t want to bulk up too much? The small Thirsties Cotton inserts are a perfect fit
inside the LKC diaper envelope.
The Smart Bottoms 3.1 is insanely trim. It’s probably the trimmest diaper we’ve ever used. But the
trimness means it’s limited to the number of ounces it can hold. We were able to use the 3.1 diapers up until
the toddler phase without an extra insert. The small Smart Bottoms hemp inserts are a perfect go to.
The hemp is on the thicker side, but since you’re added it to an ultra-trim diaper, the combo works out
Also the Smart Bottoms small hemp is on their newly designed Born Smart! All too often, a baby
outgrows the absorbency of a newborn diaper far sooner than they outgrow the diapers size.
Grab some Smart Bottoms boosters during the newborn days and then save them for the toddler days.
These also work for heavy wetters and as an addition to a bedtime diaper setup.
Lighthouse Kids Company AIO + Thirsties Small Cotton
Lighthouse Kids Company makes a book fold type AIO diaper. The LKC AIO does come with a small
booster that holds 1-2oz, but sometimes you need a little more that that. The diaper is made of bamboo
and holds 11oz (without the booster) which is amazing for an AIO diaper.
Lots of inserts work with this book fold system, but there is one particular insert that fits like a dream.
The Thirsties small cotton insert fits like a glass slipper.
This system is user friendly and a caregivers favorite. We send this combination to daycare for our
toddler who has turned in to a heavy wetter and flooder.
Need a naptime set up or heavy wetter go-to? Look no further than this combo: a Lalabye AI2 diaper
and Thirsties Hemp insert for a whopping 18oz combined.
The Lalabye already comes with 2 bamboo inserts that can snap into or on top of the pocket opening.
The bamboo is a little thicker, allowing for 12oz of absorbency. The thin Thirsties hemp pairs well all
while not making the diaper too bulky.
A great nighttime option for anyone! I love our fitted with covers, but sometimes it’s nice to only have
to put on an AIO for bedtime. My husband LOVES this comination.
A Grovia ONE holds almost 20oz and when paired with a Best Bottoms Bamboo insert, the set comes in
at 27-28oz! This is enough to hold most kiddo’s nighttime pee.
The ultimate, heavy wetter and toddler proof night setup! Have a favorite cover, grab it. Prefer a certain
fitted, grab that too! Then layer a Best Bottoms Microfiber insert on top of the fitted and cover this with
a Smart Bottoms Fleece Liner. Microfiber is extremely quick to absorb. This quick absorption allows the
fitted time to catch up which causes less leaks. The fleece liner is there to protect your child’s skin since
microfiber can cause irritation.
As toddlers get older, they tend to hold their pee and flood a diaper. This makes this microfiber and
hemp combination of the Thirsties duo insert a great addition to a toddler’s diaper stash. When they
flood, the microfiber quickly absorbs and reduces the chances of a leak. I personally still add the Smart
Bottoms fleece liner, but since they are sold in packs of 5, this works out.
If you are only wanting to buy 1 type of insert that will work for all of your childs needs, my vote goes to
the Thirsties hemp. If you are open to trying several styles, and materials, try them all! Please remember
that not every baby is the same, so not every system will work the same for you. It is all about playing
around with your setup to find what works best for your little one. You really can’t go wrong if you buy
any one of the inserts Abby’s Lane sells. There will always be a use for the type you buy.
As always, feel free to tag me in the Facebook group Abby’s Chatties if you have questions! If I don’t
know the answer, one of the 21,000 plus members will know. You will get taken care of and your
shopping will be fully enabled.
