This is ending up way longer than I thought it would. Bear with me. :-)

The husband and I just had a baby at the end of last month and we’ve been doing Indian cotton prefolds and Thirsties Duo Wrap diaper covers for the diapers and a combo of extra terry washcloths we got at the baby shower and 1.5 yards of flannel that I just cut up as wipes, plus a Snappi to help hold the diaper in place. DH had never changed a diaper in his life before our daughter, so the fact that he said recently, “Cloth diapers are so easy. I don’t know why more people don’t do it,” should show you how simple our system is. And it’s totally affordable.

We used a bunch of gift cards and so got the covers (started with 7 in each size of the Duo Wraps, which are size adjustable) practically for free, then bought a dozen prefolds and are borrowing another dozen from a friend, bought 2 Snappis just in case one broke, bought 2 large Planetwise wet bags for the house (one to have while the other is in the wash – learned that pretty quickly), a medium one and a wipes pouch for the diaper bag, bought the flannel and got the washcloths as gifts (and we got a TON of them), and bought a diaper sprayer (though we haven’t used it or even set it up yet – I’m guessing the bigger she gets, the more necessary that will be). Honestly, the hardest part was finding an HE powder detergent (which I also got with a gift card). All in all, if we’d actually paid out of pocket for everything, it would have cost us about $380 before tax, but since we didn’t, it only cost us about $140.

This sounds like a lot of money, BUT – if you go to Costco and buy the giant box of 250 diapers, you spend about $45. If the baby uses a dozen a day, that’s not even a month’s supply – it’s about 3 weeks. After about 6 months, you’ll have gone through about 9 boxes that size of diapers – and spent $405 on diapers alone, not including wipes. And be nowhere close to the end of diapering, especially if you plan on having more than one kid. You’re already ahead if you bought cloth diapers, and since you’ll have to think about adjusting sizes soon, the extra $25 from not using disposables, plus whatever wipes would have cost, pretty much pays for a dozen prefolds the next size up. So you spend a total of $90 to get 2 dozen more prefolds, which will last you until the baby is at least 18 months old – and probably a good while longer – while someone buying disposables is spending that much every 2 months.

Cloth diapering costs out of pocket with no discounts and pre-tax for the first two years: about $470 (detergent and washing not included). Disposable diapers alone for the first two years assuming you shop at big box stores: about $1215 (wipes not included).

This is going a pretty frugal way. You could go WAY fancier and more expensive (and Abby’s Lane would thank you). You could also probably cut some things here and there and save even more money. But this is how we’re starting and it’s been working AWESOMELY for all three of us.
